Microneedling: Boosting Collagen for Youthful Skin

Changes in skin texture, fine lines, and lingering acne scars can make your skin feel less smooth than it once did. Microneedling offers a way to encourage gradual skin renewal by working with your body’s natural healing response.

How microneedling works

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses fine needles to create controlled, tiny punctures in the skin. These stimulate a healing response that supports the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that help give skin its structure and flexibility.

Over time, this process may improve firmness and texture. The changes develop gradually as the skin repairs and remodels itself. Cleveland Clinic

What concerns can it help improve?

Depending on your skin and treatment plan, microneedling may soften the appearance of

  • Certain acne scars and surgical scars.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Uneven skin texture.
  • Enlarged-looking pores.
  • Stretch marks.

Results vary, and treatment generally improves the appearance of these concerns rather than eliminating them completely.

The appropriate device and treatment area matter. FDA authorization applies to specific devices and uses; it does not mean every microneedling device has been evaluated for every concern or body area.

What to expect during your appointment

Your visit begins with a skin assessment and discussion of your goals. Before treatment, the skin is cleansed and a topical numbing medication is usually applied to improve comfort.

You may still notice pressure, warmth, or a scratching sensation. Some pinpoint bleeding can occur. Appointment length depends on the treatment area and includes time for preparation and numbing.

Choose a healthcare professional trained in microneedling. A new needle cartridge should be used for every treatment session, including repeat visits for the same person.

Recovery is usually manageable, but give your skin time

After treatment, your skin may feel warm, tight, or mildly swollen, similar to a sunburn. Redness, or temporary darkening in deeper skin tones, can occur. These reactions commonly settle over a few days, although some take up to a week.

Avoid scheduling treatment immediately before an important event. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends waiting at least 24 hours before applying makeup; your provider may advise longer based on your treatment.

Follow your personalized aftercare instructions, including guidance on sun protection and when to restart skincare products. Recently treated skin can be more sensitive to ingredients such as retinol, exfoliating acids, and alcohol.

Results take time

Most people need several sessions spaced weeks apart. The number and timing depend on the concern being treated, treatment depth, and how the skin heals. More complete improvements can take several months, and maintenance treatments may be recommended. Cleveland Clinic

A consultation helps determine whether treatment is right for you

Tell your provider about your medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding, cold sores, skin conditions, bleeding disorders, and any history of raised scars or difficulty healing. Active infections and certain medical conditions may require postponing treatment or choosing another approach.

Possible complications include infection, pigment changes, and cold-sore flare-ups. Experience treating your skin tone is an important consideration when choosing a provider.

Be thoughtful about serums and treatment add-ons

Greater product penetration does not automatically mean better or safer results. The FDA has not cleared microneedling devices for use with other products, including cosmetics, topical medications, or platelet-rich plasma, and has not reviewed the safety and effectiveness of those combinations. Use only the aftercare products your treating clinician recommends.

Radiofrequency microneedling is a different treatment that adds heat. It has a distinct risk profile, and the FDA has reported serious complications with certain uses, including burns, scarring, fat loss, and nerve damage. Ask which type of treatment is being proposed and discuss its specific benefits and risks.

A consultation at Luxe Arte Aesthetics is an opportunity to discuss your skin concerns, understand your options, and establish realistic expectations for a personalized treatment plan.
