Botox or Dysport? A Guide to Naturally Refined Results

Botox Cosmetic and Dysport both use botulinum toxin type A to temporarily reduce selected muscle activity. They can soften appropriate expression-related lines, but choosing between them involves more than a brand name or price per unit.

How are the products different?

Botox Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA; Dysport contains abobotulinumtoxinA. They are distinct prescription products. Their potency units are not interchangeable, so the same number of units does not mean an equivalent treatment. Ask for the total proposed plan and cost rather than comparing unit prices alone. Dysport prescribing information.

Approved treatment areas also differ. For example, Dysport's cosmetic indication covers moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows in adults younger than 65. Your clinician should explain whether the proposed use follows the product's labeling or is off-label. Off-label use requires a thoughtful discussion; it should not be presented as an approved indication. Dysport prescribing information. Compare the Botox Cosmetic labeling for its own indications.

What does research tell us?

A 2021 Cochrane review of 65 randomized trials found that botulinum toxin type A improves facial wrinkles, with much of the evidence concerning frown lines. It also identified an increased risk of eyelid drooping and limitations in longer-term comparative evidence. The review does not establish one brand as the best choice for every face or treatment goal. Read the Cochrane review.

Plan for a gradual result

Discuss when changes may begin, when the clinician will assess the result and when retreatment could be considered. Onset and duration vary with the product, dose, treatment area and individual response. Avoid choosing a product because an exact start day or duration has been promised.

Explain how much movement you want to retain. A consultation should assess your expressions and anatomy, rather than assume that a stronger effect will look more natural. Bring details of previous injectable treatments and how you responded to them.

Balance convenience with safety

Bruising, tenderness, headache or temporary eyelid or brow drooping can occur. Botulinum toxin products carry a warning about effects spreading beyond the injection area. Difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking after treatment requires immediate medical attention. Your clinician should discuss the risks relevant to your medical history and proposed treatment. Read the product safety information.

An infection at the intended injection site or a known allergy to the product can rule out treatment. Dysport is contraindicated in people with a cow's milk protein allergy, which is different from lactose intolerance. Disclose neuromuscular conditions, medications, previous reactions and pregnancy or breastfeeding before deciding. Ask who performs treatment, what follow-up is included and whom to contact if your result or symptoms concern you. Do not stop prescribed medicines to prepare for treatment without discussing this with the prescribing clinician.

Three useful consultation questions

  • What makes this product appropriate for my anatomy and the area being treated?
  • What is included in the total price and follow-up plan?
  • How will we assess both appearance and unwanted effects before considering further treatment?

If your concern involves volume or contour rather than muscle movement, the Botox and dermal filler guide explains why a different approach may be considered.
